Description

Moorland Flight by David Taylor

David’s work is often described as having a spiritual and mystic quality that is reminiscent of the great J.M.W Turner. He uses his visual memory as his main point of reference to portray landscapes based upon the essence of the three elements, land, sea, and sky. There is an intensity, a passion, and a timeless elegance to the velvety landscapes he creates. He explores the effects of light emanating from the sky onto the sea and land below, capturing a moment in time, a unique unrepeatable experience immortalised on canvas. The moment is ephemeral and there is a sense of transience to the work; the shifting light ensures that the landscape in a constant state of flux, a reflection of life that is ever-changing.

David leaves the viewer to establish the horizon and to engage in the semi-abstract forms that fuse together making the landscape come to life. “I aim to capture the raw elements of the landscape, not seeking a pictorial image, but striving to achieve a feeling of light and movement together with a dreamlike quality, that draws the viewer within. I like to believe that my work has soul and exudes a feeling of calm and serenity.”

Using oil as his choice of medium, David manipulates the paint with a palette knife and brushes to build depth and atmosphere into his work that reflects the dramatic weather conditions he enjoys painting. There is a subtlety to the colour palette that belies the force of nature that is encapsulated, which offers a sense of serenity and calmness to each piece.
