How Green Was Your Valley by Allen Tortice (Canvas)
As one of the most collected Northern painters in the UK today, Allen Tortice draws on his experience growing up in a mining family around the industrial landscapes he captures today. Through his paintings and watercolours, we can learn a lot about his life, which also saw him serve as an excellent marksman for the army. Since 1987 Allen has maintained a serious focus on his art.
With his style of paintings depicting scenes similar to that of Lowry in terms of nostalgia and industrial motifs, his works have excelled him to almost legendary status over the past year. Allen has had a number of one-man exhibitions around the country, and his work has now been featured on television.
The canvas edition of “How Green Was Your Valley” gives us a look into the past of a typical mining town, using the contrast between a busy high street of old in the foreground and the raw industrial coal mining operations that dominate the scene in the background. Such views were commonplace in the north of England at the time, and Allen’s personal experience of growing up in such a setting plays heavily into giving the scene some genuine background and authenticity.
