“Both pieces have text layered throughout. The text has to be authentic and not manipulated into existence in any way. I often put the canvas aside until that moment arrives. I paint myriad things, words, sentences, just whatever wants to flow through, adding layers of text. It’s important I don’t explain what’s actually written as the clarification instantly creates limits and imposes an interpretation. What somebody sees written in my work, and how that relates to the overall painting, may keep changing. I find that dynamic meeting between painting and viewer exciting and fundamental to my work”
